Swiss post doomers E-L-R give a new viewpoint on expansive musical vistas on their debut full-length “Maenad.” I.R., the bassist, and S.M., the guitarist, all of whom sing, and M.K., the drummer, construct an atmospheric, heavy, and intoxicating brew that sounds both familiar and innovative at the same time. As individuals, E-L-R have a shamanistic character and keen spiritual awareness that they share with their countrymen. Our Survival Relies on Us, or Hexvessel, a Finnish folk band. Their, according to I.R., “Music has a visceral quality to it. To feel our energy, we want the listener to enter our zone and become engrossed. It grew out of our close collaboration over many late evenings, during which we also wrote down our own stories. We were able to define and carry out our vision in this way.” “Mnad” is the follow-up to the group’s renowned 2018 demo “In Splendour & Sedation,” which was named after the female followers of the Greek deity Dionysus, who are linked with nature and excessive feasting, respectively. The CD portrays a story in stages, with emotions altering and shifting like passing landscapes. “It’s mostly our own interpretations of books and poems, mixed with experiences we’ve had,” I.R. explains, “often portraying scenes and occurrences or feelings.” “Hypnotic rhythms floating in a veil of perpetual reverberation,” she describes their sound. Given E-L-strong R’s sense of community, it’s no surprise that they’re eager to collaborate with like-minded artists like Dool mastermind Ryanne van Dorst, who sings on ‘Lunar Nights,’ or Colin van Eeckhout of Amenra, who sings on ‘Above The Mountains There Is Light’ and plays hurdy-gurdy in the intro to ‘Glancing Limbs.’ On September 27th, 2019, “Mnad” will be released as a Digipak CD, LP (black and limited golden vinyl), and cassette tape.
