Ghost Bath’s beautiful new album, Self Loather, has them breaking out of obscurity. Ghost Bath, founded in 2012 by Dennis Mikula, had a strange origin. Mikula began releasing music under the pseudonym??? in 2013, followed by Funeral (2014), garnering widespread acclaim from a crowd unaware that the visionary song-master was an American from small-town North Dakota. When Ghost Bath released their second full-length album Moonlover in 2015, they were already one of the most intriguing newcomers in extreme music history. Ghost Bath got a worldwide agreement via Nuclear Blast Entertainment based on the success of Moonlover. VIO AGRO’s black metal-inspired vio-aggro sound evolved into a more dangerous yet personal pensive realm, driven by dysthymia, revulsion, and tragedy. When Starmourner came up in 2017, Ghost Bath had found a home in a viciously dark and sad vector. Starmourner startled Ghost Bath’s fanatical fanbase and journalists alike with “Thrones” and “Ambrosial.” In 2017 and 2018, they toured the US and Europe with Thy Art Is Murder, Fallujah, Katatonia, Astronoid, and M’L. Death, joy, and dread/hatred are the themes of Ghost Bath’s latest album, Self Loather. A Sanguine Mask’s sad suite and the unsettling atmosphere of “Sinew and Vein” close out Ghost Bath’s fourth full-length. Self Loather is a sonic experiment in shadow, nuance, and strength, mixed by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Bosse-de-Nage) at The Atomic Garden Recording Studios in Oakland. Self Loather is Ghost Bath’s most fascinating but loathsome record.
