Description

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets newest release SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound opens with a bizarre (brief) introduction to their freaky world. The track is titled “Big Dijon” and it does just enough to disorientate, before blasting the listener off into the cosmos with what follows. The Perth, Australia based band, led by Jack McEwan on guitar/vocals, have much in common with fellow countrymen Pond, Tame Impala, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard but on this record, they turn the energy all the way up, mixing pop flavor with heavy psych-rock to sweeten the sounds. The group’s raging and palpable sense of adventure is coursing through “Sawtooth Monkfish” as the band coalesces around a killer beat while the distorted, overloaded rock and roll of “Tallyho!” fits right in with modern releases from The Flaming Lips and The Lennon Claypool Delirium. The record as a whole conveys a cohesive energetic mood yet “Tripolasaur” stands out as a highlight. The soaring riffs from lead guitarist Lance Parish and smashing drums delivered by Danny Caddy are euphoric as the band peaks and peaks, thundering and exploding with glee. While the tracks are all kept around three and a half minutes there is a simulated feeling of stretching out as like-sounding efforts are placed next to each other elongating their similar effects. Video game bleeps spark the excellent “Mr. Prism” into existence, using a pumping bass to drive forward before “The Terrors” continues amping the low end towards Tool-like levels with an overloaded finale. The pairing of “Hats Off to the Green Bin” and “Glitter Bug” drip with Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LSD flavored pop-rock, enhancing the melodic acoustic/electric guitars in the tripped-out aural haze. “Pukebox” is much more pleasant than the name suggests with a hip-shaking fuzz groove while “Mundungus” delivers glorious lead guitar riffs from Parish. The galloping “Mango Terrarium” and freakout closer “The Tales of Gurney Gridman” both stick around a bit too long, however, when SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound wraps up, fans of driving psychedelic rock will be sporting a Permagrin from consuming this newest dose of the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Pax, Murf
